Fish Farming

Fish farming, also known as aquaculture, is the process of raising fish in an enclosed area for use in the fishing industry. A farm can be built on land or over naturally occurring bodies of water, such as off of an ocean shore. Within the body of water, a wide variety of fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants can be raised. Every year, such farms throughout the world produce over 65 million tons of many varieties of sea life for harvesting.

A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. Fish species raised by fish farms include salmon, catfish, tilapia, cod and others. Basically, there are two kinds of aquaculture: extensive aquaculture based on local photosynthetical production and intensive aquaculture, in which the fishes are fed with external food supply.

Fish care guide

The culture/rearing of these fishes can be taken up normally in cement tanks. Cement tanks are easy to maintain and durable. One species can be stocked in one tank. However, in case of compatible species two or three species can occupy the same tank.Ground water from dug wells / deep tube wells/ borewells are the best for rearing fish.

Feeding is generally done twice in a day or according to the requirement and size of fish.
Young fish are fed mainly with Infusoria, Artemia, Daphnia , Mosquito larvae Tubifex and Blood worms. For rearing, formulated artificial or prepared feed can be used. At present no indigenous prepared feed for aquarium fish is available in the world.

Moreover, most of the fish species grown for their ornamental importance can be bred in India.Ninety five per cent of our ornamental fish export is based on Foods. Such capture based export is not sustainable and it is a matter of concern for the industry. In order to sustain the growth it is absolutely necessary to do culture-based development.

Water exchange, is a must for maintaining water quality conducive for the fish health. Only healthy fish can withstand the effects of transportation and fetch a good price. Permitted chemicals / antibiotics, vitamins, etc can also be used for preventing / treating diseases.

Katla

Prawn is a saltwater shrimp species. It is generally cultivated in coastal areas where tide is available in the river. Prawn farming needs saltwater throughout the year. So, select a place for prawn farming where saltwater is easily available for whole year.

Pellets are often low in fiber, leading to constipation, and this in turn can cause swim bladder disorders and bloating in your fish. High-fiber foods such as Daphnia and vegetable foods will help to prevent this.
